by Allie Burton

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A sixteen-year-old on her first heist to steal an ancient Egyptian amulet inadvertently receives the soul of King Tut…and the deadly curse that comes with it.
And Olivia is not alone at the museum.
A member of a secret Society, Xander believes it is his place to inherit King Tut’s soul and justly rule. He knows nothing about the society’s evil plan to control the world or the curse. Now, he must deal with the female imposter who stole the amulet.
Xander convinces Olivia they must form a temporary partnership. The two teens develop a connection, and together they must figure out how to end the curse before it turns deadly. On the run, unable to touch because of the curse, and dealing with a male soul inside her female body, Olivia must learn to trust Xander.
As the mystery surrounding the amulet unfolds, Olivia and Xander start to fall for each other. But is love enough to save them and the world from destruction?
Read an excerpt:
(From end of Chapter Two)
“Olivia.” I liked how he said my name. With a sophisticated accent, not a trashy lilt like the boys in the family. “Shouldn’t you look outside first?”
I firmed my lips and kept my pace heading straight for the door. “I trust my people.” I tossed my braid around and shot him a look. The dig was deliberate.
“So did I.” His response cut my bravado in two.
My family wouldn’t ditch me. Like the Marines, we didn’t leave a man behind as long as I brought Fitch what he wanted.
I pushed against the metal bar to open the door. Damp air hit my face. So did the stench of recently-smoked cigarettes. A black SUV was parked in front of the doorway with its lights off. The shiny car looked expensive and new.
Fitch didn’t own a vehicle like that.
Something hard and pointy shoved into my back. Clicked. Like an animal about to become lunch, I tensed.
“Don’t move,” a gruff voice said from behind.
Not Fitch’s voice. Or the old creepy guy Jeb. My brain analyzed the situation while my instincts wanted to scream. “Are you a security guard? Because some old guy is in there trying to steal—”
“Shut up. I got a rifle kissing your heart.” How long had the guy been rehearsing that corny line?
“Wh-what do you want?” My tongue tripped over the words.
“You.”
First, the security guard. Then, Jeb and Xander. Now, this guy.
It sucks to be so popular.
'A Lion's Pride' by Alyssa Rae
Blurb:
Alex is no ordinary girl. Her parents have been murdered. Her town is under siege. She finds herself raising her sister under the watchful eyes of her father's biker club-The Fu Lions. Now a target, caught in the crosshairs of a rival club-The Reaper's Sons. Alex struggles to find her place among the Lions to protect her sister, her town, and her pride.
Read an excerpt:
Prologue
The rope was tight around her wrists, rubbing the skin raw and cutting off the circulation in her hands. It was nighttime now; darkness flooded into the locked room. She retied the loose strings on her sneakers, grateful that she had been smart enough to put them on that morning and wishing that she had taken the time to put on a pair of socks too. She woke to a day that felt like a dream, but the dream had quickly faded into a nightmare.
She closed her eyes, but sleep was impossible. She tried to recall as many details as she could about where she was. The ride here wasn't long, maybe 20 minutes, which meant she couldn't be that far outside of town. She was driven here in the back of a gray, windowless van. When the van stopped, she was pulled out so fast she could barely take in her surroundings. She was able to catch glimpses of a log cabin, situated off the main road and on the outskirts of woods.
There were at least 10 men on guard at the cabin; it had taken six to bring her here: three on motorcycles, two in the van and one that didn't make it back. The man who rode in the back of the van with her tied her wrists together tightly with rope and left his gun pointed to her chest for the entire ride. When they arrived at least four more had been waiting at the cabin. Each man was heavily armed, carrying a machine gun in his hands, a 9mm holstered under their jackets, and she was willing to bet each one of them had a knife hidden somewhere on their person. Some of the men looked familiar to her, which was no surprise. Before they managed to lock her in this room, she heard one of them mention more would be coming later that day. A small army guarding a log cabin and a single twenty-something year old girl; it seemed ridiculous, but in reality it wasn't. The men knew the kind of friends that she had, and knew they would be coming for her, and fast. They had been smart to prepare.
But the men had made one crucial mistake when bringing her here; no one had thought to search her pockets when they grabbed her. She always carried her father's pocket knife wherever she went. The knife had been in her shorts pocket when the men picked her up, right next to her cell phone which she knew her friends were tracing now or would be soon. The second the men left her in this locked room she jumped into action. One of them would realize the mistake and would come back to check her. She had to hide the knife and the phone before they did.
The room was made entirely of wood, the inside walls matching the log cabin's outside walls, with hardwood floors. The room was bare with no furniture and no place to hide. She quickly got down on all fours and crawled on the floor, testing the floorboards with the hope that one of them would be loose. As quietly as she could she ran her hands along the floorboards closest to the walls testing for weaknesses. She was running out of time. Finally she spotted a floorboard whose seam did not match the seam in the wall. Gently she tried to lift the board up, but it was nearly impossible to move with her fingers. She took out her knife and shoved it into the crack. She wiggled the knife until she was able to pop up the floor board. The board made a loud creak as she lifted it, tearing it from the original seam, and ripping it apart from the board next to it. She paused to make sure no one heard her before she did anything else. Afraid she wouldn't be able to lift the board up again without the knife, she sawed at the edge with the knife, leaving a gap big enough to fit her finger, but small enough to not be noticed. She dropped the phone and knife underneath and then fit the floor board back into place.
She sat down in the opposite corner of the room across from the door, hoping that she would be able to keep their attention away from the cracked floor board where she hid the phone and the knife. This was the best she could do for now. Moments later the door to the room opened again and one of the men from the van walked in. He grabbed her wrists and pulled her up off the floor until she was standing in front of him. The man smirked as he began to run his hands over her clothes checking all of her pockets and even inside her shirt. She had been right about hiding her phone and knife and had managed to do it just in the nick of time. The man continued to smirk even after he was finished. He stood facing her, his hands holding her tied wrists that were already bleeding from the tight rope.
"I could have protected you," he said. "You never gave me a chance."
She didn't respond, instead she stared him down, never breaking eye contact. He was a big man and she knew she had no chance of overpowering him. Even if she did manage to bring him down, there were still nine more outside the door. No, she would wait; her time for revenge would come. Her cell phone was on. Her friends would know her location in just a few hours. They would find her, he would find her, and then they would come for her. She only hoped they wouldn't be too late.
What would you do if your dreams were more than just dreams?
When you knew in the depths of your soul that you were unlike the rest?
For seventeen-year-old Dahlia Winters, this is her truth. Her coping mechanism is to simply forget and deny the strangeness that is her life. Orphaned, her past remains a mystery. Now residing with a foster family, she finally feels normal--or attempts to. Yet, dreams continue to torment her. Not only consumed by visions of miraculously healing wounds, but of a lust for something she should never naturally crave.
Then a green-eyed stranger enters her life echoing her inner thoughts and voicing warnings about others wanting to harm her. He knows things about her that no one should possibly know, and he awakens her in ways she never expected.
This leads Dahlia to discover who she really is, for she is more than justhuman. With this newfound knowledge, and the elements suddenly fighting against her, she finds it hard to trust anyone. And as she finally awakens and comes to grips with the power she possesses, she fights to stay alive.
Before the world, as she knows it, ceases to exist.
Read an excerpt:
I was five when I knew something was different about me.
My first memory.
I had no recollection of who my parents were or what they even looked like. All I knew was that I was alone at the orphanage, disconnected from the outside world. I picture it even now, almost like an oil painting: the thick bristles of the paintbrush created the bright blue sky as it connected to the shockingly white snow. The snow blanketed everything around me, as if protecting me, the green forest displayed at every angle.
The orphanage was out of place in such a nature-infused environment. A large, two-story building, its windows seemed to cover almost every surface. I remembered the brightness of the sun as it hit my sleepy face through one of those many windows. It would instantly warm my body, greeting me to yet another day.
Vines covered old gray bricks as they coursed over the external surface of the orphanage. I had nightmares about those same vines making their way into my room as I slept. They’d appear ominously as their shadows pounded against the walls, taunting me as a storm brewed on outside. Venturing toward my bed, the vines would slither across my body, trapping me in place. One would wrap around my neck, squeezing tightly, as I struggled for air. Rendered frozen, the feeling of fear would take hold, bubbling up deep inside my chest. And as I felt the burning pain in my throat, a thought would flash through my mind of this moment being my last. It never was, though, as I would instantly wake up.
I always did have a wild imagination.
To chase away the terror, I would stand before my windowpane the morning after. Sighing in relief, my eyes would be drawn to the vast forest off in the distance. It surrounded the orphanage, like a gatekeeper, the leaves of the trees bristling in irritation. The wind blew right through those tall structures, whistling, as my ears picked up the all too familiar sound.
I somehow found myself standing directly in front of that very forest. My memory was hazy on exactly how I got there but I recalled waking up, after one of my many dreams, to the feeling of immense hunger as my body stirred in discomfort.
Then suddenly I was at the foot of the forest.
I would not describe the sensation as simple hunger. I would almost describe it as a feeling of starvation, like there was some essential component my body was missing. Whatever it was, this need was so powerful I was weak in the knees with the pain; my belly contracted and released, contracted and released, continually. Food provided temporary relief for me, but there was always this presence in the corner of my mind as my brain searched for the one thing my body craved.
I ignored that nagging voice in my head, the one whispering for the one thing I needed. It was something unfathomable yet inherent. I paid it no attention and just openly stared at the forest beckoning me. Taking shallow breaths, the cool air blew in and out between my cold, chapped lips.
It was at that exact moment I realized the forest isolated me from everything and everyone outside of its confines—almost like a hungry bird circling its prey. Even young, my instincts picked up on that, immediately telling me something.
Eyes were watching me.
Title-Fallen Tears
Series-Blood Crave # 1.5
By- Christina Channelle
Genre- YA Paranormal
Publication Date- January 25, 2013
Blurb-
We left off from DAHLIA with only a name--a name that is the next piece to the puzzle. A name that will eventually, "lead us to him." But before we delve into the continuation of the Blood Crave Series, let's answer the question that's been on all our minds.
Who is Rowan?
This 21,000 word novella answers that question, and of how Rowan has come to know the vampire with pitch-black eyes.
Read an excerpt:
He looks like a demon warrior.
That was the first thought that crossed twelve-year-old Rowan Miller’s mind as her eyes caught sight of the dark, foreboding figure standing before her.
Eyes closed, she had been lying on the cold, wet grass. Water slowly seeped through her already chilled body while her dark, curly locks surrounded her head like a halo. Her hands felt like blocks of ice as she squeezed them into fists, then switched to rubbing her fingers together. She hoped she could get them warm—if only a little bit. The night had been cruel, both rain and the harshness of the wind taunting Rowan where she lay, as if mirroring the two feelings consuming her.
Anger.
Sadness.
She tried conjuring up more blissful memories from her past. The feeling of hot sand between her toes as she raised her head to the intensely bright sun; the sound of sweet laughter erupting from her friends as she attempted to mimic their English teacher’s penguin-like gait; the overwhelming taste of hot fudge sundae after a long bike ride on a warm summer day.
The look of adoration on her father’s face as he applauded vigorously during her dance recital.
These memories briefly pierced her mind but it was difficult to forget her reality. These thoughts provided only a weak mirage to where she really was.
As it happened, she was alone in the dark, seeking shelter underneath a bridge from the harsh weather.
Rowan wrapped her arms tightly around herself, trying her best to forget the fact that she was chilled to the bone. The whirling sound of the wind continued on as the rain pounded all around her.
She tried forgetting the fact that she couldn’t keep her teeth from chattering, or that her body wouldn’t stop shaking. The fact that her stomach was in so much pain—empty because her last meal had been twenty-four hours prior. It had been half of a sandwich left behind on a restaurant table by someone. They had gotten up to go to the washroom when she quickly snatched the food.
As the rain persisted, Rowan tried to forget that she was all alone in this world.
That was what she had been thinking when she suddenly felt she was no longer alone. It was a new kind of presence, bringing an even deeper chill to the already cold air.
Rowan instantly stilled where she rested, her body on high alert. The streets had been unkind to her and she quickly learned it was necessary to be cautious at all times.
For the past three months, she’d been on her own, struggling to manage life on the streets since her father passed. It wasn’t easy, especially at such a young age, but she had quickly grown up in that time. Running away from a system that she truly detested, she’d fled to this unknown city, hoping it would be better than the emotional abuse she received at the numerous foster homes where she had stayed.
Anything was better than that.
Bringing her mind back to the present, her eyes opened to reveal a man standing by her feet. Although the night was dark, she instantly locked gazes with his equally dark eyes as he stared down at her in complete and utter silence. A lingering stillness overtook the two as they continued to stare at one another, Rowan’s eyes slowly widening with fright.
Her body silently shook, racing with thoughts of how to escape. But as she tried to get up her body wouldn’t—or rather couldn’t—move. It was as if his eyes had somehow cast a spell on her and she was literally frozen to the spot. Her mind struggled against her immobile body with no success. It carried on like that, this stillness, until he finally spoke.
“I too, am alone in this world.”
Dark. Night. Death.
Things Rowan has been trying to avoid for the many years since she was first turned. Her choice: to sleep away the darkness; it beats having to deal with the craziness of life. Or rather, death. However soon after awakening, she stumbles upon a lone figure whose presence is shrouded with mystery.
She assists him in his search for answers making it even more difficult for Rowan to forget her past. She realizes she can’t hide forever as she is literally being sucked back into her chaotic world: a world where both fallen angels and vampires exist, manifested on earth as lapsus and lamia.
Not particularly … friendly with one another.
Rowan struggles to resist her hunger as a demon vampire while dealing with unwanted desires for a fallen angel from the past: a relationship that could only spell trouble. Not to mention the unresolved feelings she still has for a loved one from long ago.
While all of this is happening, they must all seek the hidden evil that hunts them—for there’s an ancient fighting to wake up and destroy everything Rowan holds dear.
Read an excerpt:
Boys were too easy—a pretty face and they were hooked. Internally, she rolled her eyes at his response. She could tell he no longer thought of being lost.
Frankly, it was quite pathetic.
Putting on an apologetic face, she frowned, stepping forward. “Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t hurt you, did I?” She brushed a hand against his upper arm for added effect and knew he worked out from the bulge felt beneath his clothes. She felt the shiver vibrate through his body from her contact.
Hook, line and sinker.
She rather enjoyed this game of cat and mouse. It gave her something to do and, to be honest, it was rather refreshing. Mind control wasn’t as entertaining and she didn’t do it unless needed.
“No. Um, no, you didn’t. I’m fine.” His voice pierced through Rowan’s thoughts, sounding slightly off centered, almost like a pubescent boy. It didn’t match his physique at all. She watched him swallow deeply, clearing his throat. Rowan bit her lip, trying to hide the smirk forming on her face.
She instantly let go of his arm, eyes widening. “Well, then. Now that I know you’re fine….” She took a step back, smiling as she slowly walked away. She accentuated her stride, allowing her hips to sway gently back and forth when—
“Wait!” She paused in mid-stride, her smirk quickly forming again. Smothering her smile, she changed her expression to one of apologetic sincerity. Hands clasped together, she turned to face him, watching as he jogged over. He stopped, only mere inches away from her.
“What’s your name?” he murmured.
Her candy having dissolved, Rowan chose to suck on her tongue instead for the lingering taste, then gave her upper lip a quick swipe. She watched his blue eyes flicker to her mouth as he followed her movements. She slowly exhaled, her breath filling his nostrils before finally answering.
“Rowan.”
He continued to watch her mouth, not saying a word. He sure was slow. Although aroused, which was easily seen by his dilated eyes, his quick, shallow breaths, the way he looked at her, he didn’t make a move. Rowan was sure if he had his way, they’d be staring at each other all night long.
That was so not happening.
Impatient, she pursed her lips, deciding to take things into her own hands. He was definitely not the pursuer. Taking a closer step to him, she brushed herself firmly against him, feeling his body stiffen. Slowly moving her mouth toward the shell of his right ear, she whispered something any guy would love to hear. Her devious smile locked in place, eyes glinting wickedly. “Would you like to have some fun?”
Thoughts by Christina Channelle, author of the 'Blood Crave' Series
Merry Christmas! It is my pleasure to welcome author Christina Channelle to the blog today. She is the author of the Blood Crave series. Today, she is telling us about the appeal of the paranormal for both readers and writers, as well as her Top 10 Books. Thanks for stopping by!
Appeal of Paranormal Books for Readers/Writers
For me, it’s an escape from reality. It’s fun and a time when things aren’t so serious. Obviously there are no supernatural creatures that go bump in the night (hopefully). But when you read a paranormal book, almost anything can happen. It’s the surprises, the twists and turns, that I find enjoyable. Same thing goes as a writer. I like how I’m in charge of things. Now I’m in the driver’s seat, trying to come up with things that’ll surprise and shock the readers. It’s one of my favourite things to do, indulging myself with a paranormal book.
**Your Top 10 Favorite Books
That’s a difficult list to come up with as I’ve read and loved so many books since childhood. Here’s a list of some books I’ve read lately and have fallen in love with.
1) Hopeless by Colleen Hoover
2) Escapism by Maria Dee
3) American Girl on Saturn by Nikki Godwin
4) Fire Country by David Estes
5) Being Plumville by Savannah J. Frierson
6) The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
7) The Edge of Never by J. A. Redmerski
8) Mutilate My Heart by Emily Godwin
9) Powered by Cheyanne Young
10) Progress by Amy Queau
Read an excerpt:
I didn’t mean to gawk, or blush, or get a goofy grin on my face, but as he stood there just inside the archway of the alcove I’m pretty sure I did all three. Though in my defence, I couldn’t help it – he looked amazing. I’d never thought of Alex as “hot,” or “gorgeous,” or any of the other terms that a lot of girls my age used to describe a good looking guy. That isn’t to say that Alex wasn’t any of those things, or that I didn’t find him attractive, as I did. Very much so, in fact. His dark blonde hair was always styled, he dressed very well, and his eyes – which had always been my favourite feature – were the most amazingly clear shade of storm cloud blue you could imagine. The thing was that the specifics of his appearance weren’t usually what came to mind when I thought about him. He was Alex. It had never mattered what he looked like.
And while it still didn’t matter, I was not about to pretend like I didn’t notice. He was wearing a black tux like Jocelyn, but instead of the white shirt and black tie, Alex’s tie and shirt were black, and he also had a charcoal gray vest on under his jacket. His cuffs were French, his shoes shone as though they were new, and across his chest lay the same green sash Jocelyn was wearing.
Not going to lie, there was definitely a flush rising up my neck….
Though red as I was, oddly enough, Alex’s didn’t blush at all. I’d have thought with me ogling him the way I was, that his ears would be ablaze, but then again, he seemed far too preoccupied to notice the way I was looking at him. Preoccupied… looking at me. His eyes clung to me like condensation on a glass, with an expression that seemed to hover between anger and fear – though deep down I knew it was neither. Still, I couldn’t help but feel self-conscious.
Why didn’t he say anything? Was he upset? Did he not like the dress? Was something wrong?
I took a breath to speak, but before I could find my voice he was coming straight toward me. He didn’t look around, didn’t check the hall, or so much as shift his eyes away from mine as he crossed the small alcove in three strides, took my face in his hands, and kissed me.
And dear God… what a kiss…
His mouth moved against mine with more passion than I’d ever felt from him before. His right hand slid up into my hair and gently but firmly held my mouth to his, while his left dropped to my waist and pulled me tightly against him. His fervour poured over me like boiling water over ice, melting me down to my core. I had no idea what had come over him, but whatever it was, it was hot, it was intense, and if he wasn’t careful, it was going to bring me to my knees.
But what hit me the hardest wasn’t his sudden hunger or intensity, but the hint of something deeper, driving like an undercurrent beneath his passion. It was something I’d never seen from him before, but unmistakable all the same.
Possession.
Alex had never been a dominant or outspoken person in general, but conscious or not, something in him was definitely sending a message: “She is mine.” It may have only been implied, but it was definitely there, and the very idea sent a tingling shiver across my skin as I gripped the lapels of his jacket with a throaty sigh. The message was raw, it was primal, and above all else, it was true: I was his. And he was mine. The fact that we had to hide it around these people didn’t make it any less valid. We belonged to one another.
Forever.
A few short seconds later he pulled back with a husky breath, resting his forehead against mine for a moment before releasing me and stepping back slowly, his eyes glowing. He hadn’t said a word – he hadn’t needed to. I smiled, hoping he saw the “I love you” in my eyes. His answering smile told me he did.
Praise for Series:
“The twisty plot and swoony romance of The Seers kept me turning the pages as I fell in love with Becca and Alex all over again.”
Trisha Wolfe, author of Fireblood
“It had a gripping plot, plenty of exciting twists and turns and some pretty fantastic characters which all combined to keep me glued to the pages.”
A Dream of Books
“If this is any notion of what Julianna Scott can do, I cannot wait to see what is next. The Holders was refreshing and just one heck of a good read.”
The Book Cellar
“I am so thankful this is only the beginning of a series because I couldn't imagine not being able to read a continuation of Becca's story. The Holders is a novel too entertaining and emotionally charged to pass up!”
Lovey Dovey Books
“There are a lot of other things to love about The Holders – a detailed history and Celtic element come to mind – but it was really the characters that sold this novel for me.”
Cover Reveal! 'Othello (Shakespeare for Everyone Else #2)' by C.E. Wilson
Othello (Shakespeare for Everyone Else, #2)
Release Date: 2013
Summary from Goodreads:
Shakespeare’s work features some of the most memorable stories and characters ever created, yet for too many curious readers the combination of ultra-dense dialogue and unfamiliar historical settings make tackling the Bard’s work something between a tedious chore and a confusing mess of bird-bolts and quondam carpet-mongers.
While it’s nearly impossible to replicate or improve on these works, it is (thanks to their timeless nature) possible to make them more accessible to a wider audience.
In this Young Adult retelling of one of William Shakespeare’s most memorable plays, join C.E. Wilson as she breathes new life into Othello, the second book in her series Shakespeare for Everyone Else.
About the Author
C.E. Wilson is currently living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her husband and her two dogs and two cats. They are all the loves of her life. When she’s not writing young adult fantasy novels, she enjoys writing short stories on her Deviant Art page. She loves to write stories involving giants and little people (also known as GT) and nothing helps her to write more than Coca-Cola and glazed doughnut holes.
About the Author
Claribel Ortega is a graduate of the SUNY Purchase journalism program, and got her start writing for the school’s Independent Newspaper. There, she quickly rose the ranks from editing the student’s often times hilarious ads and ramblings on the back page of the paper to staff and feature writer.
After graduation, Claribel worked as a reporter for The Rivertowns Enterprise, a local paper in lower Westchester County, New York. As a reporter, she enjoyed going to board of education meetings and texting the town mayors about the line at Starbucks.
Today, Claribel works for The Combined Book Exhibit, a book marketing company in Westchester NY.
She lives in New York with her really awesome boyfriend, her suspiciously intelligent yorkie Pancho Villa and is surrounded by an impenetrable fort of books she gets from her job.
